Project Description

CMIA was approached by the client with whom we had worked with previously on high end residential developments in London, with a brief to design him his dream home. Our client had purchased a 1930’s bungalow on an exclusive street in Essex, where other houses were being demolished and replaced with substantial new dwellings. Our client’s property had a narrow 26-meter frontage but opened at the rear to 2.5 acres of garden with a lake which stretched behind the rear gardens of the neighbouring houses.

About the Project

We explored period house styles with the client as contemporary was not an option, Queen Anne and Tudor were quickly dismissed in favour of a Georgian design. Internally the client favoured a contemporary floor plan with enormous rooms and although with over 8,000sqft the house only has 5-bedroom suites. The entrance hall sets the tone for the house and behind an enormous front door lies a dramatic two storey space which fills the entire core of the house and included a central bridge reached by a sweeping curved staircase. Aside from the billiard room with wet bar and cinema room the house also had other cool features such as a glass topped wine cellar, in ground pool and Zen balcony of the principal dressing room. Externally the house has extensive brick and stonework work details to bring the façade to life which met the client’s aspirations.

A detailed view

Planning was complex, but working with the Council and undertaking extensive research a permission was achieved. CMI have since had five further commissions in the same street with three new houses due to be built this year.
